How to choose a pickleball paddle
Power vs. control is the first fork. Power paddles (thinner cores, foam edges) reward big swings and put-aways but punish off-center hits. Control paddles (thicker 16mm cores, big sweet spots) make blocks, dinks and resets at the kitchen line far more forgiving. Most improving players win more points with control than raw power.
Spin comes from the face. Raw carbon and textured foam faces grip the ball for more spin on serves and rolls. If you like to shape the ball, prioritize a gritty face.
Mind your arm. If you've had tennis elbow, a lighter, well-balanced control paddle with a large sweet spot is the cheapest insurance you can buy. Avoid the stiffest, heaviest power paddles.
Budget honestly. You do not need to spend $200 to get a great paddle — sub-$100 options now deliver genuine spin and control. Buying for the family? A two-paddle starter set gets everyone on court this weekend.
