Play real games

We cover the rules — serve, scoring, the kitchen — and a few basic shots (serve, dink, drive), then you play friendly games with other beginners on courts sorted by level. Within 90 minutes you've actually played pickleball.

THE BASICS, IN 60 SECONDS

It's not hard. We promise.

Pickleball is famously beginner-friendly — the court is small, the ball moves slow, the rules are simple. Here's what you'll learn in your first 10 minutes.

THE COURT

A badminton-size box.

SERVICE COURT SERVICE COURT SERVICE COURT SERVICE COURT THE KITCHEN THE KITCHEN NET (34" mid) BASELINE BASELINE

The blue zone on each side of the net is "the kitchen" — you can't hit the ball out of the air while standing in it. That's it. That's the trickiest rule in pickleball.

THE RULES

Four things to know.

  1. 1Serve underhand, diagonal, hit it past the kitchen line.
  2. 2One bounce each side after the serve, then volley if you want.
  3. 3Don't volley in the kitchen (the yellow box).
  4. 4First to 11, win by 2. Only the serving team scores.
THE LINGO

5 words you'll hear.

Dink · soft shot
Volley · hit it in air
Lob · high arc shot
Ace · serve they miss
Kitchen · the no-volley zone

❓ FREE PICKLEBALL FAQ

Free pickleball in Austin, answered

Is the intro class really free? +

Yes — the 90-minute beginner intro session is $0. Just to be clear: it's the intro session that's free, not regular open play. Open play, court rentals, and other programs are paid — see pricing.

Do I need experience or my own paddle? +

No. The intro is built for total beginners — we'll walk you through grip, scoring, and the basic rules. You don't need your own paddle; paddles are available to rent at the desk ($5), and indoor balls are on every court.

Where is Pickleland? +

We're at 21427 Martin Lane, Pflugerville, TX 78660 — Austin's highest-rated indoor pickleball club, just north of the city. See visit & hours for directions.

How long is it, and what are your hours? +

The free intro session runs about 90 minutes. Pickleland is open Mon–Fri 8am–10pm and Sat–Sun 8am–8pm, seven days a week.

What should I bring, and how do I reserve? +

Bring athletic or court shoes, a water bottle, and comfy clothes — we'll teach you the rules and have balls on every court, plus paddles to rent ($5) if you need one. Reserve your spot on PlayByPoint: pick a session, book it, and show up.
