How is a DUPR rating calculated?

DUPR compares your match result to the result expected from the players' ratings. If you outperform expectations your rating rises — even in a loss — and if you underperform it can fall, even in a win. Margin of victory, opponent strength, match type (official vs. self-posted) and how many matches you've played all factor in. The exact formula is proprietary, so any calculator is an estimate.

Can I estimate my DUPR without playing a rated match?

You can estimate it from an honest self-assessment of your skills — rally consistency, serves and returns, dinking, third-shot drops, hands at the net, resets and strategy. Our quiz maps those answers to a DUPR range. To get an official DUPR you still need recorded match results.

Why did my DUPR go down after I won?

Because DUPR rates performance against expectation. If your ratings predicted an 11-3 win and you only won 11-9, you underperformed relative to expectation, so your rating can dip despite the win. Winning by less than expected against weaker opponents is the most common cause.

How DUPR actually moves

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) rates every player from 2.0 to 8.0 off real match results. The key idea since DUPR's algorithm update: it rates performance against expectation, not just wins and losses.

Before a match, DUPR predicts a score from everyone's ratings. Afterward it compares what happened to that prediction. Beat the prediction and your rating rises — even in a loss. Fall short of it and your rating can dip — even in a win. Margin of victory matters, the strength of your opponents matters, and official matches move your number more than self-posted rec games.

Your rating also gets "stickier" the more you play. With lots of recent matches DUPR is confident in your number, so each new result nudges it only slightly. Early on — or after a long layoff — it swings more as the system learns your level.
