How pickleball scoring works

Only the serving team scores. Win a rally on serve and you get the point; win it while receiving and you don't score — you earn the serve instead (a "side-out"). That's why scores climb slowly and why server number matters.

The call has three numbers in doubles: your score, their score, and the server number (1 or 2). So "5-3-2" means the serving team has 5, the other team has 3, and it's the second server. When the second server loses a rally, it's a side-out and the other team takes over on server 1.

Games start at 0-0-2. The first serving team begins on its second server, so a single lost rally hands over the serve. It evens out the first-server advantage — and this scorekeeper does it for you automatically.

Singles is simpler: two numbers (your score, their score), and a lost rally just swaps the serve. Most games go to 11, win by 2; tournaments sometimes play to 15 or 21.
