How to use the bracket generator
- Paste your list, one team or player per line. Numbering like "1." or "2)" is stripped, and duplicates get a (2). Or type a number and hit Fill.
- Choose single or double elimination. Single is fastest; double gives everyone at least two matches.
- Seed it or draw it. Seeded uses your list order, so put the strongest first (by DUPR, say, or last event's results). Random draw deals the lines at random, and Shuffle deals again.
- Run the event. Tap each winner to advance them. Byes go through on their own, and in double elimination each loser drops into the losers' bracket automatically.
- Share it. Copy the link for players' phones, paste the text into your group chat, or print a copy for the wall.
Single vs double elimination
Single elimination is one loss and out. A field of n teams plays n โ 1 matches, which makes it the quickest way to a champion and a good fit for a short session or a big field.
Double elimination gives everyone a second life. Under USA Pickleball's description of the format (Rule 15.B.1), a first loss sends you to the consolation, or losers', bracket and a second loss ends your event. The losers' bracket winner then plays the winners' bracket winner. If the losers' bracket team wins that final, a deciding match is played; USA Pickleball makes it a tie-breaker to 15. The loser of the losers' bracket final finishes third. Expect 2n โ 2 matches, or 2n โ 1 when the decider is needed.
Why sanctioned events lean on double elimination: USA Pickleball guarantees every entrant at least two scheduled matches per event (Rule 15.F), except in single elimination without consolation. For a club night, single elimination is fine if everyone knows it going in.
How seeding and byes work
Brackets come in powers of two. If your count isn't 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64, the bracket rounds up and the empty lines become byes. Ten teams fill a 16-line bracket, so six teams skip round one.
Byes go to the top seeds. Seed 1 plays the lowest seed, seed 2 the next lowest, and so on, which is why the empty lines land against the best teams. The order (1 v 16, 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 4 v 13 in the top half) keeps the top two seeds apart until the final and spreads the byes across both halves, so a bye never meets a bye.
Seed, or draw at random? USA Pickleball requires sanctioned events to have their players ranked and the draw set up fairly (Rule 15.E). For a club event, seed by rating or recent results if you have them. If you don't, or you want a mixer, use the random draw.
Pool play into a bracket. A popular format is pools first, then a playoff: each pool plays a round robin to seed a single or double elimination bracket (USA Pickleball Rule 15.B.5). Build the pools with our round robin generator, then paste the finishing order here as your seeds. Playoff matches are often two of three games to 11, or one game to 15 or 21, all win by 2. Bracket FAQ
How do you make a pickleball tournament bracket?
List your teams or players, best first if you are seeding, and choose single or double elimination. Round the bracket up to the next power of two (4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 lines), give the empty lines to the top seeds as byes, and pair seed 1 against the lowest seed, seed 2 against the next lowest and so on, so the top two seeds can only meet in the final. This generator does all of that for free, then lets you click winners to advance them and print or share the bracket.
How many byes does a pickleball bracket need?
Count up to the next power of two; the difference is the number of byes. Ten teams fill a 16-line bracket, so six teams get a first-round bye, and the byes go to the top six seeds. With a power-of-two field (4, 8, 16, 32 or 64) nobody gets a bye.
What is the difference between single and double elimination?
In single elimination, one loss and you are out, so a field of n teams plays n - 1 matches. In double elimination, a first loss drops you into the losers' (consolation) bracket and a second loss eliminates you, so everyone plays at least twice. It takes about twice as many matches: 2n - 2, or 2n - 1 if a deciding final is needed.
How does the final of a double elimination bracket work?
The winner of the losers' bracket plays the winner of the winners' bracket. If the winners' bracket champion wins, the event is over. If the losers' bracket champion wins, both teams now have one loss, so one more match decides first place; USA Pickleball's rules make that deciding match a tie-breaker to 15. The loser of the losers' bracket final takes third.
Should I use a round robin or a bracket?
A round robin guarantees everyone the same number of games and suits social play. A bracket is faster to a single winner. Many events do both: pools play a round robin to set the seeds, then the top finishers go into a single or double elimination playoff. Use our round robin generator for the pools and this bracket generator for the playoff.
Can I share or save the bracket?
Yes. The bracket and every result you enter are saved on your device and in the page link, so Copy share link sends players the same bracket, with results, to open on their phones. You can also copy it as text for a group chat or print it; the printout uses a landscape layout without the page around it.
