South Austin Rec Center, or SARC, is a beloved public pickleball venue in South Austin. Situated conveniently right off the street, the pickleball courts are accessible via a path on the left side of the rec center building.

Court Setup

SARC offers two permanent pickleball nets/courts and space for four additional pop-up nets, totaling six courts. There are also indoor options.

  • Permanent Nets (Challenge Courts/Kings Courts): These courts operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Players stack their paddles in line with the net to indicate the order of play. Winners (kings) stay on the court, while the next set of players gets a quick warm-up before challenging the reigning champions.
  • Pop-Up Courts: These four courts require portable nets, which players bring and set up themselves. These courts are also first-come, first-serve, and players often occupy them for one to three hours at a time.

Playing Dynamics

The community at SARC is diverse, with about two-thirds of players arriving with partners for doubles, and the remaining third coming as single players. Single players can stack their paddles on the challenge courts and wait for another single player or a partner to join them.

The challenge courts might seem daunting due to the high skill level of some players, but they are a fantastic way to meet new people and improve your game. If you’re hesitant, the pop-up courts are a great alternative where you can join others or invite someone for a game. For those seeking a partner, the APU’s WhatsApp Group is a helpful resource.

A Pickleball Hotspot

SARC is a pickleball hotspot in Austin, ideal for both beginners and more advanced players (up to 4.5+ level on the challenge courts). Weather permitting, you’ll find players on the courts almost every day:

  • Weekdays: Courts get busy around 3-5pm and stay active until 9-10pm.
  • Weekends: Play starts early around 7-8am, with people playing into the afternoon and sometimes evening.
  • Indoors: Check out their latest schedule here. Currently on Mondays from 6-8:30pm.

Why SARC?

SARC is perfect for anyone looking to learn, meet new people, and quickly improve their pickleball skills. The community, consistent activity, and variety of court options make it an excellent choice for pickleball enthusiasts in Austin.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, SARC offers a welcoming environment to enjoy the sport, make new friends, and take your game to the next level.

If you are looking for an indoor option, there’s always Pickleland.
