The best pickleball court in Austin depends on what you’re after: a guaranteed indoor game at your level, or a free park court close to home. This guide covers both, starting with our own club and then every public court in the city.
The City of Austin lists 34 places to play pickleball: 22 park court sites and 12 recreation centers with pickleball programs. Almost all of the park courts are first-come, first-served with no fee listed, and the rec centers run drop-in open play on set days. This guide lists every one by part of town, with the address, court count, lights, net situation and open-play times as the city publishes them.
Last checked October 2026 against the City of Austin pickleball page, each rec center’s own city page, and the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center’s site. The city says schedules change often, so call the rec center before you make a special trip.
Quick answers
Where can I find free open play this week? Any city park court on this list, any day. Most are open 7 days a week, 7am to 10pm, first come, first served. If you want a ready-made group to rotate into instead of bringing three friends, go to a rec center session: South Austin Rec Center’s all-ages open play on Tuesdays, 7–9pm, Dittmar at midday on Tuesday and Thursday or on Saturday mornings, or Montopolis on Monday nights. Which courts are lit for night play? The city lists these as lighted during park hours (open until 10pm):
- Dick Nichols District Park (South): 5 pickleball courts, the most of any free lit site
- Rosewood Neighborhood Park (East): 2 dedicated courts plus 2 more on a multi-purpose court
- Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park (North): 4 courts
- Little Zilker Neighborhood Park (South): 4 courts
- Austin High Tennis Center (Central): 3 dedicated courts, open weeknights 5:30–10pm during the school year
- Pan American Neighborhood Park (East): 4 courts, but only until 10pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
- South Austin Neighborhood Park (South), Brentwood, Patterson and Shipe (2 courts each)
- Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center (East): 8 lit courts, but it charges $5 a person and you have to reserve
What’s the best free or cheap indoor option? The city rec centers. Dittmar has 4 indoor courts and Austin Rec Center and Dove Springs have 3 each. You can only play during their listed open-play blocks, and the city doesn’t list a fee for them. For indoor play any day of the week, Pickleland in Pflugerville has $5 weekday open play on 9 climate-controlled courts (details further down).
Before you go: nets, lights and the rules
The city’s listing describes the nets three ways, and it’s worth checking before you drive:
- Multi-sport net system on site. Most multi-purpose courts have an adjustable net that converts between tennis and pickleball. The city posts instructions for adjusting it.
- Bring your own portable net (Balcones and Brentwood) or nets not included (Rosewood and Springwoods).
- Not stated. For the dedicated courts and a few others, the city doesn’t say whether a net is left up. If you’re trying a court for the first time, bring a portable net.
The same goes for lights. Where an entry below says “not listed,” the city doesn’t mention lights for that park, so plan on daylight play until you’ve seen it yourself.
The city’s court rules apply everywhere. If people are waiting, limit your game to 60 minutes. Don’t take more than one court at a time. Don’t tape or paint lines, and don’t add nets or alter nets that aren’t adjustable. Tennis courts without pickleball lines are for tennis only.

The Oswaldo A.B. Cantu/Pan American Recreation Center next door (2100 E 3rd St, 512-978-2425) runs Varsity Generation open play for the city’s 50+ program on Mondays, 10am–noon.

- Open play: ATPC runs daily open-play events, including “Newbie” sessions for novices, with RSVPs through the Team Reach app. It also runs DUPR ladder leagues on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday evenings (ATPC pickleball page).

Just north, in Round Rock: Clay Madsen Recreation Center (1600 Gattis School Rd, 512-218-3220) sells a $5 visitor day pass. You must be 18 or older, fill out a membership form and show ID and proof of residence. Its city page posts the gym and outdoor-court schedules only as linked image flyers, so we couldn’t confirm current pickleball times. Call first. When it’s 100° or raining
Austin’s park courts are all outdoors, and the free indoor sessions above happen a few hours a week. You have three realistic options:
- A city rec center session from the table above. They’re the cheapest indoor play in town, but the schedule is fixed and the courts share multi-purpose gyms.
- The Alamo Rec Center pavilion on Thursday afternoons. It’s covered but still outdoors.
- A paid indoor club, if you want to play whenever it suits you.
We’re one of those clubs, so here are the facts. Pickleland is at 21427 Martin Lane in Pflugerville. It has 9 climate-controlled indoor courts, and open play is sorted by level, so you can show up alone and rotate in. Weekday open play is $5. - The city’s list at austintexas.gov/parks/pickleball is the primary source for everything above. Check it if a court looks different from what’s listed here.
- USA Pickleball’s court finder. The governing body now points players to Pickleheads as its official court and game finder (USA Pickleball). Older guides, including earlier versions of ours, pointed to Places2Play instead.

FAQ
Are there free pickleball courts in Austin?
Yes. The city lists 21 park court sites with no fee, open on a first-come, first-served basis, mostly 7 days a week from 7am to 10pm. Austin High Tennis Center is explicitly free whenever Austin ISD isn’t using it. City rec centers also run drop-in open play without a listed fee. The only city site on this list that charges is the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center at Walnut Creek, at $5 per person.
Where can I play pickleball at night in Austin?
At any park the city lists as lighted, until 10pm. The biggest are Dick Nichols District Park (5 courts), Rosewood, Little Zilker and Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park (4 each), and Austin High Tennis Center (3 dedicated courts). Pan Am is lit but only open until 10pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. For guaranteed lit courts, reserve at the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center, which is open until 10pm on weekdays.
Do I need to reserve a public pickleball court in Austin?
Not at city parks. They’re first come, first served, and if people are waiting you should cap your game at 60 minutes. The exception is the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center, where reservations are required up to 2 days ahead. Rec center sessions are drop-in during the listed hours.
Do Austin’s public courts have nets?
It depends on the court. Many multi-purpose courts have an adjustable multi-sport net system. Balcones and Brentwood ask you to bring a portable net, and Rosewood and Springwoods say nets aren’t included. For dedicated courts the city doesn’t say, so a portable net in the trunk is the safe bet. The city prohibits adding nets or altering fixed ones.
